Two deaf children seek an absent parent in time zones set 50 years apart in Carol director Todd Haynes’s exquisite tearjerker based on the young adult novel by Brian Selznick (Hugo). In 1927, Rose (deaf actress Millicent Simmonds, who is superb) slavishly follows the career of silent screen goddess Lillian Mayhew (an incandescent Julianne Moore, in one of two roles). Meanwhile, in 1977, Ben (Oakes Fegley, also excellent), pines for the mysterious father he never knew. Both escape to New York where their fates entwine in a ravishing swell of enthralling emotional uplift.  Radio Times

“It’s all clearly building up to something: Key characters are briefly abandoned, storylines are cut short, random details are held onto for a little longer than anticipated. I did wonder at times if the denouement would ever do justice to the constantly shifting, jazzy zigzag of the tease. I needn’t have worried: Haynes gives us an extended finale that not only offers emotional payoff to the held-breath anticipation of the story, but also serves as a tribute to storytelling itself — and to the wonders of following your dreams and maybe even your nightmares.”  Village Voice

“Todd Haynes’ gloriously constructed film Wonderstruck is a thing to behold, even if it seems at times that the parts don’t quite add up to the whole. Screw math: Sometimes the sum total isn’t the totality.”  Austin Chronicle

This creative and visually arresting adaptation of Brian Selznick’s critically acclaimed novel marks a filmmaker at the top of his game.”  Eye for Film
