Curmudgeonly Alice (Gemma Arterton) lives alone in her clifftop house, writing books that seek to debunk folklore and disprove the existence of magic.  Consumed by her work, taunted by the local children who think she is a Nazi spy, she is haunted by a love affair from the past.  When she is forced to open her home to spirited young Frank (Lucas Bond), an evacuee from the London Blitz, his innocence and curiosity awaken her deeply buried emotions.  Alice comes to learn that wounds may be healed, that second chances do occur, and that, just perhaps – magic really does exist.  With Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Tom Courtenay.

“What a lovely, hopeful and rather magical movie this is. The feature debut from writer/director Jessica Swale, Summerland provides just the tonic we need in times of turmoil. A tale of love lost and found, told with wit and charm, it maintains an impressive balance between the sly and the sentimental, gently subverting mainstream formulae as it slips back and forth in time, alternating between the realist and the romantic.”  The Guardian

This is a film designed to please rather than to challenge expectations, but there’s more going on than first meets the eye and it’s by developing its secondary themes that it finds substance and additional emotional dimensions. “  Eye for Film
