With more than a nod to the Meredith Kercher affair, Stillwater follows Bill Baker (Matt Damon), an American oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter (Abigail Breslin), in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system, Bill builds a new life for himself in France as he makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter.

“Even the somewhat-hackneyed final twists help underline the film’s wider theme, which is the extraordinary capacity people have for change even in strange circumstances. McCarthy presents characters who seem easy to pigeonhole, then resists easy labels. The result is far more captivating than an ordinary true-crime drama.” The Atlantic
