In 1986, five-year-old Saroo lives in India with his poor but happy rural family. On a trip with his brother, he gets lost and soon finds himself alone on a decommissioned passenger train going to Calcutta, 1500 miles away from home. Now totally lost in an alien urban environment and too young to identify either himself or his home to the authorities, Saroo struggles to survive as a street child until he is sent to an orphanage. Adopted by the Brierley family in Tasmania, he grows up in a loving, prosperous home. But for all his material good fortune, Saroo (Dev Patel) finds himself plagued by memories of his lost family. He tries to search for them, though guilt drives him to hide this quest from his adoptive parents (David Wenham and Nicole Kidman) and his girlfriend (Rooney Mara). Only when he has an epiphany does he realize not only the answers he needs, but also the steadfast love that he has always had from his loved ones in both worlds.
“Loss and belonging are the themes of this incredible true story; it is the simplicity of the storytelling that brings it to life.” Urban Cinefile
“Though there are shades of Slumdog Millionaire in its gripping depiction of a young boy thrown by fate onto the streets of India, this affecting true story still has plenty to offer.” Radio Times
“A classy crowd-pleaser with an especially magical first half.” Total Film
