The Young Victoria (PG) 100 mins"Love Rules All." Written by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) and produced, somewhat incongruously, by Martin Scorsese and the Duchess of York, The Young Victoria follows Victoria from her difficult childhood ruled over by a tyrannical mother through the first years of her reign, including her courtship and marriage to her cousin Albert. Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) excels in the title role, opposite Rupert Friend (Pride and Prejudice, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) as Albert. The terrific cast includes Jim Broadbent and Harriet Walter as King William and Queen Adelaide, Miranda Richardson as the Duchess of Kent and Paul Bettany as Lord Melbourne. "It's good to see that a period drama can be a success without the seemingly obligatory 'sexing up' of historical relations. Instead this is a charming, meandering film that rarely strays off the path of royal historical accuracy. Emily Blunt does a grand job conveying the cracks of vulnerability in the Queen’s wobbly ascent from subjugated child to dynamic monarch. Rupert Friend also does a fair job as the dour, dreamy Prince Albert captivated by the young Queen's spirit and vivacity. All in all, it's a rather romantic affair considering it was an arranged marriage, based on political expediency. The film is elegantly directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who manages to keep you captivated through what is, by no means an thrilling story, albeit a true one. There's no surplus of melodramatic bodice-ripping in this costume drama - and it's all the better for it." Tiscali UK
