Volver (15) 120 mins
The power of motherhood and the blessing of good friends
run as themes through Pedro Almodovar's entertaining fantasy Volver, even
though the central topics are abuse and death. Raimunda (Penelope
Cruz) lives in the city with her layabout husband and teenage daughter.
Returning to her native village for her aunt's funeral, she and her sister Sole
(Lola Duenas) hear gossip that their mother - presumed dead in a fire with her
husband some years ago - has recently been seen in the town... Volver was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year, and received awards for best screenplay and best actress (awarded unusually to the ensemble female cast).
"This is Almodovar's most sophisticated film to date: a joyous, touching, funny and thrilling account of the up-and-downs of family life. Part thriller, part comedy and part drama, it also offers Penelope Cruz the chance to show just why she is so highly rated as an actress in her native country, and not just the piece of arm candy that we have come to know from her Hollywood offerings." Tiscali UK
"A richly evocative return to Almodovar's childhood roots" Variety
