Vicky Cristina Barcelona (12A) 96 mins"Life is the ultimate work of art." Just as New York City was the backdrop to Woody Allen's Manhattan, the stunning city of Barcelona is the setting for the romantic adventures of Vicky and Cristina. These two young Americans spend a summer in Spain and meet a flamboyant artist (Javier Bardem) and his beautiful but insane ex-wife (Penélope Cruz). Vicky (Rebecca Hall) is straight-laced and about to be married. Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) is a sexually adventurous free spirit. When they all become amorously entangled, the results can only be described as chaotic. Penélope Cruz won both a Bafta and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. "Allen has set out to amuse and divert us and discover secrets of human nature, but not tragically deep ones. The actors are attractive, the city is magnificent, the love scenes don't get all sweaty, and everybody finishes the summer a little wiser and with a lifetime of memories. What more could you ask?" Roger Ebert "Allen has created four richly colourful and detailed central characters, all given luminosity and life by Bardem, Hall, Johansson and particularly Cruz whose Maria Elena is like a beautiful whirlwind as she rips through life, scattering everything in her wake. If Allen's films are a reflection of the location in which they are set, then after the drab cynicism of his London work, the radiant passion and sunshine of Vicky Cristina Barcelona suggests he should stick to warmer climes." Tiscali UK "Love has never been so complicated as in Woody Allen's scrumptious Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a sexy romp involving a ménage a trois that keeps changing like the ever-changing tide of love itself. As for its central location in the city of Barcelona, bathed in a golden glow and filled with its distinctive Gaudi architecture, Allen perfectly captures its romance in this tale of adventures of the heart."
