Moviola Associate Venues
MOVIOLA is the UK’s largest rural cinema service. We are pleased to share our experience with community cinema groups wherever they are located.
We can offer a range of informal advice or a formal Consultancy service in rural and community cinema for which payment will be required. Our range of expert advice – informed by nearly 10 years of activity and meeting many other providers - includes programming advice, fundraising, planning a sustainable business, event organisation and show management.
Our ASSOCIATE MOVIOLA scheme, which is open to community groups, consists of a Film Programming service specially tailored to the rural audience which promises friendly and quick response times and some financial savings in film hire.
Moviola books films for nearly 200 venues. Film distributors like working with us and are sometimes prepared to give us films well ahead of DVD release (The King’s Speech and Mamma Mia are two examples). We also premiere films and have exclusive UK rights to show them: In winter 2009 we premiered the runaway success Morris: A Life with Bells On, a world exclusive which generated interest literally from around the globe; and currently we have the exclusive UK rights to show the wonderful Australian film Mao’s Last Dancer.
How does it work?
Our year is divided into 3 seasons, roughly corresponding to school terms. Each season we produce a menu of recommended films which we send out by email, with a DVD of trailers arriving by post: in June for the September to December season; in November for January to Easter; and in February for Easter to the end of August. This allows you access to the very latest releases, and means that you do not have to commit to a year's film choices all at once. We handle all the licensing and contacts with distributors, and we offer two levels of service, Gold and Silver. With Gold, we send you the disk for your show; with Silver, you supply your own disk. Please read both sets of Conditions to select the one best suited to you.
What does it cost?
If your film choices are being used by other halls in the Moviola network, your film hire will be 35% of your box office or a £40 minimum, with no VAT to pay. This film hire goes straight back to the film distributors – Moviola retains no part of it. If you want a film which is not on the menu, we can probably source it for you, but it will cost you more since distributors levy a minimum charge. In addition to the film hire, we charge an administration fee of £40 (Gold Service) or £25 (Silver Service) per show. This charging structure may offer a considerable saving for smaller venues.
Associates also benefit from an optional service of short supporting films and/or trailers at no extra cost.
To become an Associate, you need to register (click here for the current conditions and
registration document). There is no joining fee. Please note that Associate status is only open to non-profit distributing community-based groups. Our Charitable status prevents us from formally assisting commercial cinema operations.
We have Associate members in 6 main areas:
East Anglia, Midlands, Scotland, South and South East England, Wales, West Country
