Together  (PG)   110 mins

"Some lessons can only be learned by heart."

From the director of the wondrous Farewell My Concubine comes this story of a thirteen-year-old violin prodigy who comes to Beijing with his peasant father to be taught.  Of course he is taught far more than music by the big city and the love between father and son is sorely tested.  This is a lovely, moving, utterly absorbing film not embarrassed by strong emotions like love and ambition, but with the courage to face them head on.  In a way it's an old-fashioned, big studio crowd pleaser - the sort Hollywood once had the knack of producing.  But Chen Kaige's genius is also to make it ravishing to look at and with people and situations that are never cloying but universally real.  Great music, amazing violin playing and fascinating glimpses of the new China.
