The Terminal  (12A)   128 mins

"Life is waiting."

A visitor (Tom Hanks) fleeing the war that ravages his tiny Eastern European homeland finds himself stuck in the terminal of one of New York City's airports when the time of his landing coincides precisely with the point at which the war causes his nation of origin no longer to exist, meaning that his passport and paperwork are no longer valid.  As a man without a home, he takes up residence in the terminal itself, befriending the staff of the airport, falling in love with an airline flight attendant (Catherine Zeta Jones) and conducting a running battle with a customs official (Stanley Tucci).  Directed by Steven Spielberg, this is a delicate, wondrously acted comedy drawing inspiration from the sad men of movie history (Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin) for the central character and also the films of Jacques Tati for many of the comic situations.
