In this moving love story, Anthony Hopkins plays C S Lewis, the popular theologian and author of the Chronicles of Narnia.  He is a middle-aged bachelor who teaches in an Oxford College and is happy with his masculine world of books, beer and pipe-smoking.  Then an admirer, abrasive American divorcee Joy Gresham (Debra Winger), turns up in Oxford anxious to meet him.  She is unimpressed by the misogynistic atmosphere of the university while he is disconcerted by her forthrightness.  Gradually she manages to break through his defences and their relationship develops - but she becomes terminally ill with cancer.
