Moviola > Films > Potiche Potiche (15) 103 mins Where can I see this film?
Two great icons of the French screen for the price of one! Set in 1977 in a provincial French town, and with lovingly recreated clothes and decor, Potiche is the story of Suzanne Pujol (Catherine Deneuve), a stay-at-home trophy housewife (or potiche) who steps in to manage the umbrella factory run by her husband (Fabrice Luchini) after the workers go on strike. To everyone's surprise, Suzanne proves herself a competent and assertive woman of action. But business and personal complications ensue when she enlists the help of the town's Mayor Maurice Babin (Gérard Depardieu), an ex-beau of Suzanne's who still carries a torch for her. In French with English subtitles. "Is this Ozon's more luridly coloured version of Made In Dagenham? Not quite. Because just when we think we know where it's going - with our heroine growing gradually closer to her old flame, union activist Maurice (Gérard Depardieu) - it takes a quite unexpected turn, revealing depths to its characters that we didn't know they had. A superb example of comic craft showcasing some of France's greatest actors in their prime, Potiche is a real treat and deserves to be seen widely." Eye for Film "Like its heroine, Potiche is deceptively lightweight, its camp screwball fizziness giving way to a surprisingly cogent feminist parable, in which the personal proves again and again to be the most volatile variable in the political."
