Over the Hedge (U)   83 mins

"Taking back the neighborhood... One snack at a time."

Based on an American comic strip, this animated feature is full of sly digs at suburban life, from junk food to gas-guzzling SUVs.  A group of woodland animals awakes from hibernation to discover that a tall hedge has appeared out of nowhere, half their forest has gone and they have no food left.  Their leader Verne, a timid tortoise voiced by Garry Shandling, suggests that they learn to adapt, but RJ the raccoon (Bruce Willis) advocates crossing the hedge into the new suburban development on the other side and stealing food from the humans there.  What the animals don't know is that RJ has a hidden agenda - he is actually in debt to a hungry bear (Nick Nolte), who has given him one week to replenish his food supply, or be eaten in its place.  Meanwhile the humans are less than delighted to find themselves sharing their space with animals, and Gladys, the head of the home-owners' association, engages a "Verminator" to exterminate them "as inhumanely as possible"...

"A lot of fun, awfully nice to look at, and filled with energy and smiles."  Roger Ebert
