Directed by Andrew Grieve from the novel by Bruce Chatwin, and filmed around Hay on Wye, On the Black Hill stars Bob Peck as taciturn Welsh tenant farmer Amos Jones, whose tender courtship of English missionary's daughter Mary (Gemma Jones) in the last years of the nineteenth century leads to a miserable marriage. In 1900 twin sons are born, Benjamin and Lewis, and the story covers the eighty years of their lives, which thus span most of the twentieth century and two world wars. Throughout it all they maintain an unbreakable bond.
"Our countryside hasn't looked so ravishingly lovely since Far from the Madding Crowd." Time Out
"An extraordinary account of the texture of rural life, its colours, its rhythms and its desolations." The Independent
