Nowhere Boy (15) 98 minsDirector: Sam Taylor-Wood Screenplay: Matt Greenhalgh from Julia Baird's memoir Cinematography: Seamus McGarvey Original music: Alison Goldfrapp, Will Gregory Directed by “Young British Artist” Sam Taylor-Wood, this is the story of John Lennon’s childhood and youth, up to the Beatles’ departure for Hamburg. Abandoned at the age of 5 by his pleasure-loving but troubled mother Julia (Anne-Marie Duff), Lennon, played by Aaron Johnson, was raised by his formidable aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott-Thomas), believing until his mid-teens that she was his real mother. Julia, meanwhile, lived nearby. Both women were Bafta nominees for Best Supporting Actress for their performances. "No surprises in this account of the troubled pre-Beatles adolescence of John Lennon, but sharp scripting and a pair of outstanding performances lift it out of routine biopic territory." Total Film "Sam Taylor-Wood’s achievement is to have made an emotionally charged family melodrama without blunting the edge and sarcasm that inevitably come when Lennon is your subject."
