The children have just trussed Cook to the kitchen table, and their widowed father (Colin Firth) is at his wits' end, when the alarmingly ugly Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) arrives without warning, and uses her magical powers to subdue her charges. As the children's behaviour gradually improves, so does Nanny's appearance, and her warts disappear one by one. This is Mary Poppins crossed with Roald Dahl.
