Monsoon Wedding (15) 114 mins"The rain is coming...and so is the family." This warm, funny, touching film portrays the preparations for a wedding among an upper caste Delhi family, and the tension between tradition - it is an arranged marriage - and modernity - the bridegroom is a computer programmer from Houston and the bride has been having an affair with a married TV host. Naseeruddin Shah is wonderful as the harassed father of the bride, wanting the best for his daughter and his family, but worried sick at the cost of it all and finding his loyalties pulled in two directions; Shefali Shetty is the cousin with a secret which precipitates a crisis; and Vijay Raaz almost steals the show as the wedding planner PK Dubey, who falls head over heels for the beautiful family maid Alice. A vibrant patchwork of people, colours and moods, with lots of singing and dancing, the film is fluid, crowded and in places confusing, as you try to figure out who is related to who. Then you find the pulse. The picture of dot.com India is engaging, but the emotional optimism is the most heartening aspect of this delightful film. www.monsoonwedding.indiatimes.com Screenings of this film are supported by South West Screen.
