Mona Lisa Smile (12A) 117 mins"In a world that told them how to think, she showed them how to live." A big-budget, keenly awaited Hollywood movie from British director Mike Newell, best known for Four Weddings and a Funeral. Great cast led by Julia Roberts and our own Juliet Stevenson, and also featuring three of the upcoming female stars of cinema: Kirsten Dunst (The Cat's Meow), Julia Stiles and Maggie Ghyllenhall. The time is 1953: Katherine Watson (Roberts) is a free-spirited graduate of UCLA who accepts a teaching post at Wellesley College, a posh, women-only university where the students are torn between the repressive mores of the time and their longing for intellectual freedom. It's a handsome movie to look at (great design, costumes and photography), has some excellent performances especially from the newcomers and raises some interesting questions about traditional views of the education of women.
