Miss Potter  (PG)   92 mins

"The life of Beatrix Potter is the most enchanting tale of all..."

In director Chris Noonan's follow-up to his hugely successful Babe, Renee Zellweger stars as Beatrix Potter, the woman who defied the starchy conventions of her Victorian milieu to create such characters as Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten and Jemima Puddleduck and become famous and financially independent in the process.  She went on to use her wealth to buy up and preserve farmland in the Lake District and breed sheep there, but the film is less interested in these activities than in her relationship with her publisher Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor).  Her parents considered him a tradesman and thus beneath her,  and in the event the engagement which so appalled them was cut short by his tragic death.  The film boasts fabulous scenery and a strong supporting cast including Emily Watson (Separate Lies, Wah-Wah) as Norman's sister Millie.

"The strength of Miss Potter is in many ways the simplicity of its intentions. This is an engaging story, well told. There are no deeply hidden messages or thinly disguised agendas. The cinematography is stunning (especially the landscapes of the Lake Country), the acting is solid, and Noonan's direction adds an element of whimsy to the tale. With its lack of pretensions, Miss Potter is that rare breed of cinematic animal: a movie whose entire goal is to entertain and perhaps apply a gentle touch to the heart."  James Berardinelli

"The film is a guaranteed tearjerker, but more than that, an uplifting tribute to a single woman's quest for independence that would surely make Bridget Jones blush."  BBC Movies
