Kate Winslet plays Sarah Pierce, a misfit among the highly-groomed and viciously competitive mothers of her small town. With a husband who devotes his leisure to internet porn, she embarks on an affair with Brad (Patrick Wilson, Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera), a hunky stay-at-home dad whose beautiful wife Kathy (Jennifer Connelly) has a high-flying career as a documentary film-maker. While Sarah and Brad are engrossed in their steamy affair, the town's equilibrium is disturbed by the presence of a paedophile, Ronnie, who has been released from prison into his mother's custody.
