Jack and Sarah (15) 110 minsJack (Richard E Grant) is an unpleasant and thoroughly selfish city lawyer. When his wife (Imogen Stubbs) goes into labour he is so drunk that he falls downstairs and has to be hospitalised himself. When he comes round, he finds that his wife has died, leaving him with a baby girl. At first Jack wants nothing to do with her, and the two grandmothers (Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins on wonderful form) share the childcare, but predictably enough Jack soon falls utterly in love with his daughter. He decides to raise little Sarah himself, with the help of a one-time tramp (Ian McKellen), and an inexperienced American nanny (Samantha Mathis), who must compete with Jack's icily elegant boss (Cherie Lunghi) for his heart. "Small but delightful British comedy drama" BBCi "Jack and Sarah is one of those romantic movies viewers know will end in a happy smooch. What's fine is the rush of amusing, heartrending humanity before it gets to the inevitable." San Francisco Chronicle "The screenplay, by Tim Sullivan (who also directs), is straight off the assembly line. But by casting against type, by finding an actor whose very presence insists he is not to be disregarded, the movie works in spite of its conventions."
