Is Anybody There? (12A)   95 mins

In 1980s seaside England, Edward (Bill Milner, Son of Rambow), an unusual 11 year old boy, is growing up in an old people's home run by his parents (David Morrissey and Ann-Marie Duff). Whilst his mother struggles to keep the family business afloat, and his father copes with the onset of an early mid-life crisis, Edward is busy tape-recording the elderly residents (who include Leslie Phillips, Sylvia Syms and Elizabeth Spriggs in her last role),  to try and discover what happens when they die. Increasingly obsessed with ghosts and the afterlife, Edward's is a rather lonely existence until he meets Clarence (Michael Caine), the latest recruit to the home, a retired magician with a broken heart and his own way of seeing the world.

"Is Anybody There? doesn't have much of a plot. It's more a scattered collection of buoyant set pieces, spiky witticisms, and aching reflections on mortality. But Peter Harness, the screenwriter, has put in enough of those set pieces, witticisms and reflections to keep you engaged for an hour and a half. He also finds a lovely balance between comedy and drama. Morrissey and Duff's strained marriage is both very funny and credibly sad, while Caine's mental and physical decline is touching without tipping into sentimentality. All he has to do is look at photos of himself in his chiselled prime, and you have a lump in your throat."  The Independent

"The rude and real joy is Caine's performance.  The way he sinks his teeth into the role speaks touching volumes."  The Times

"Mr Caine ... gives an exceptional portrayal of old age as the accumulation of a lifetime's experience.  In his performance the child, the youthful rogue and the forgetful codger all live at once."  New York Times

"Michael Caine gives a riveting performance.Urban Cinefile
