Hachi: a Dog's Tale (U)
93 mins
"A true story of faith, devotion
and undying love."
Director: Lasse
Hallström
Screenplay: Stephen

Cinematography: Ron
Fortunato
Original music: Jan
A P Kaczmarek
Directed by the
wonderful Lasse Halström (Chocolat, The Shipping News and …erm…My
Life as a Dog), this is a remake of a Japanese original which bears an
unmissable resemblance to Greyfriars Bobby. Adopted by Prof Parker
Wilson (Richard Gere), Hachiko accompanies his master to the station every
morning and returns every afternoon to greet him after work. He continues this
ritual long after his master’s death, meanwhile touching the lives of many
people who work nearby and teaching them love, compassion and
loyalty. The real Hachi was born in Odate, Japan, in 1923, and lived with
a professor at Tokyo University. There is now a bronze statue on the spot where the dog waited
for his master
and his story has been told and retold to Japanese children as an example of
family loyalty and the importance of being true to the memory of a loved one.
"Swedish director Lasse Halström
is the perfect choice to be at the helm of this
immensely appealing tale of the extraordinary devotion
of a dog to his beloved human companion. The
screenplay is based on a 1987 movie that recreated one
of the most loved stories in Japanese history."
