When orphaned schoolboy, Pip (Anthony Wager), unwillingly helps save the life of a convict in a lonely graveyard, bringing him food and facilitating his escape from the noose, little does he know how his life is about to change. At first, he is sent to spend his days amusing the reclusive and eccentric Miss Havisham (Martita Hunt) and her beautiful but cruel ward, Estella (Jean Simmons), and then, when he reaches majority, he is suddenly offered the opportunity to make his fortune in London. Never stopping to think how any of the strange but fortunate events in his life may be linked, he becomes somewhat self-important, spurning his family in favour of his fashionable friends, until a shattering revelation brings him back to earth and forces him to come to terms with who he is, and what truly matters in life.

Also starring Alec Guinness (Herbert Pocket), John Mills (as the adult Pip), Finlay Currie (Magwitch), and Valerie Hobson (the adult Estella).
