The Ghost
(aka The Ghost Writer) (15) 128 mins
Director: Roman Polanski
Screenplay: Robert Harris
Cinematography: Pawel Edelman
Original music: Alexandre Desplat
Directed by Roman Polanski (The
Pianist) from the hit novel by Robert Harris. A gifted author hired
to ghostwrite the memoirs of a controversial former British Prime Minister
becomes a hunted man when he uncovers explosive secrets about the past. The
Ghost (Ewan McGregor) senses something's not right from the minute he gets the
lucrative assignment to complete Adam Lang's (Pierce Brosnan) autobiography. For
starters, the previous ghostwriter, a longtime aide to the ex-Prime Minister, is
dead - an apparent suicide victim. As Lang becomes engulfed in a scandal over
his administration's harsh counterterrorism tactics, The Ghost digs into the
charismatic politician's past, discovering clues that he may be hiding something
far more shocking than the current allegations against him. Hunkered down
in a secluded East Coast beach house with Lang, his beautiful wife and political
muse (Olivia Williams), his alluring chief of staff (Kim Catrall) and a small
cadre of staffers and bodyguards, The Ghost finds himself losing his objectivity
and becoming part of the story he's supposed to be chronicling. Unsure who to
trust, he sets out on an increasingly dangerous quest for the truth that leads
to a startling discovery with far-reaching implications. But he may not live to
write the final chapter…
"With the past year dominated by special
effects, 3D glasses and giant blue aliens,
here's a refreshingly old-school mystery
thriller. It boasts great performances,
assured direction from Roman Polanski and
deals with highly topical subject matter.
But the reason The Ghost grips from
start to finish is down to its riveting
storyline. In short, it's a ripping good
yarn." Daily Mirror
“This movie is the work
of a man who knows how to direct a thriller. Smooth, calm, confident, it builds
suspense instead of depending on shock and action. The actors create characters
who suggest intriguing secrets. The atmosphere – a rain-swept Martha’s Vineyard
in winter – has an ominous, gray chill, and the main interior looks just as
cold.” Roger Ebert
"Mr. Polanski is a master of menace and, working with a
striking wintry palette that at times veers into the near-monochromatic - the
blacks are strong and inky, the churning ocean the color of lead - he creates a
wholly believable world rich in strange contradictions and ominous
implications." New York Times
