Downfall  (Der Untergang) (15) 156 mins

"April 1945.  A nation awaits its..."

Oliver Hirschbiegel's film is based in part on the memoirs of Traudl Junge, who was Hitler's personal secretary from 1942 to 1945, and begins with her being interviewed for that post.  Then it moves forward to the last days of the war.  As the Russians advance through Berlin in the spring of 1945, Adolf Hitler (Bruno Ganz), Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara), the entire Goebbels family and the remaining military staff shelter in his large bunker complex in the centre of the city. The Fuehrer's mood swings between completely unjustified optimism that his forces will still break through, and rage against the incompetence and betrayal of his military commanders. Eventually reality can no longer be ignored and the inhabitants of the bunker make their final personal preparations for the inevitable.

"Downfall is a sombre, serious, intelligent piece" Philip French

"A movie whose forcefulness kept me thinking about the subject and its treatment long after the lights had returned to the theater."  James Berardinelli
