The Da Vinci Code (12A) 149 mins"Seek the Truth." The eagerly-awaited film version of Dan Brown's best-selling novel opened this year's Cannes Film Festival amid enormous hype and controversy. While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) learns that an elderly curator at the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. A baffling cipher is found near the body. As he attempts to solve the enigma, Langdon is amazed to discover that it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Leonardo da Vinci - clues which are visible for all to see, and yet ingeniously disguised by the painter. Langdon joins forces with a French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), and learns that the late curator was involved in the secret society of the Priory of Sion. In a breathless race through Paris, London and beyond, Langdon and Neveu, with help from Sir Leigh Teabing (Ian McKellen), match wits with a sinister albino monk (Paul Bettany) who appears to work for Opus Dei - a clandestine, Vatican-sanctioned Catholic organization believed to have long plotted to seize the Priory's secret. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priory's secret - and a stunning historical truth - will be lost forever. "What Ron Howard brings to the material is tone and style, and an aura of mystery that is undeniable." Roger Ebert www.sonypictures.com/movies/thedavincicode
