Cold Mountain (15) 152 minsAdapted by famous British writer-filmmaker Anthony Minghella (The English Patient etc) from Charles Frazier's splendid novel, this is quality, epic, spectacular film-making by any standards. It's the story of a love torn apart by the American Civil War. While Ada remains at home in the small community of Cold Mountain, her lover Inman, deserting from the horrors of the front, treks home to her across the wild and beautiful landscapes of the Appalachian mountains. The film looks wonderful - immense care has gone into the details of the period, costumes, music, mannerisms. The photography is outstanding. There is great acting, too, led by Nicole Kidman as Ada, Jude Law as Inman and Renee Zellweger as Ruby (a performance which gained her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar). Minghella brings some leading British actors to the film too: Ray Winstone excels as the horrible Teague and lovely Eileen Atkins is just recognisable as the Goat Woman. This is a film to remember and one to relish on the giant screen. "Stunning! Briliant! Cold Mountain is visionary, epic and poetic." The New Yorker "One of the best pictures of the year. A masterpiece! A work of greatness." Rex Read, New York Post
