The Cat's Meow (12A) 110 mins"The Whisper Told Most Often..." "A Triangle...A Murder...A Secret...Don't Tell" A deeply satisfying drama based on the true life 1924 scandal when famed film director Thomas Ince was mysteriously shot dead on William Randolph Hearst's yacht. Peter Bogdanovich directs a very impressive cast which includes Edward Herrman as Hearst and Kirsten Dunst as his paramour Marion Davies. Eddie Izzard is a wonderful Charlie Chaplin and our own Joanna Lumley plays scandalous novelist Elinor Glyn. Jennifer Tilley is excellent as Louella Parsons. No-one has ever before dared to try to get to the bottom of this mystery, effectively covered up by a Hollywood terrified of controversy. The film is the best recreation of the 1920s since The Great Gatsby and has something of that novel's longing for a lost, doomed era. The Cat's Meow was made as long ago as 2001 and has mysteriously suffered poor and sporadic release. Maybe the ghost of W R Hearst is still pulling strings... No official website.
