Casablanca (U)   103 mins

"They had a date with fate in Casablanca!"

In war torn Casablanca, 1942, exiled American Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) runs a nightclub and arranges exit visas for those with enough money to pay for them. His world is thrown into disarray with the arrival of three key people; Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), a Czech resistance leader needing forged documentation to flee to America, SS Major Strasser, in pursuit of Laszlo, and Laszlo's wife Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), one time love of Rick and the woman who left him in Paris.

8 Academy Award nominations and three wins (Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Picture)

"One of the things that makes Casablanca unique is that it stays true to itself without giving in to commonly held perceptions of crowd-pleasing tactics. And because of this, not despite it, Casablanca has become known as one of the greatest movies ever made....the film itself has withstood the test of more than a half-century to rise, like cream, to the top. One can only imagine that, in another fifty years, its position in the hierarchy of all-time greats will be even higher." James Berardinelli, Reel Views

"Seeing the film over and over again, year after year, I find it never grows over-familiar. It plays like a favorite musical album; the more I know it, the more I like it. The black-and-white cinematography has not aged as color would. The dialogue is so spare and cynical it has not grown old-fashioned."  Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
