The resolutely single Don Johnston (Bill Murray) has just been dumped by his latest girlfriend Sherry (Julie Delpy). When he receives an anonymous pink letter informing him that he has a 19-year-old son who may be looking for him, Don is urged by his friend and neighbour Winston to investigate. He embarks on a cross-country search for old flames who might possess clues to the mystery at hand. Unannounced visits to four women - played by Frances Conroy, Sharon Stone, Jessica Lange and Tilda Swinton - hold surprises for Don as he has to confront both his past and his present. Director Jim Jarmusch, who wrote the part of Don specifically for Bill Murray, was awarded the Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes.
