As he travels home on the train for the Christmas holidays, Kay Harker (Devin Stanfield) shares a compartment with two sinister clergymen who cheat him out of his pocket money. At the station he meets an old Punch and Judy man, Cole Hawlins (Patrick Troughton), who seems to know a lot about him, and from then on he is caught up in a fantastic world of wolves, ancient heroes, medieval philosophers, talking rats and Cole Hawlins's box of delights itself, which can make him travel through time and space. Of course, it would be terrible if such a powerful object were to fall into the wrong hands, and the villainous Abner Brown (Robert Stephens) is planning for it to do just that.   This truly wonderful adaptation of John Masefield's classic book was first shown on BBC television in December 1984.
