Becoming Jane (PG) 120 mins"Her own life is her greatest inspiration."
The year is 1795 and Mr and Mrs Austen (James Cromwell and Julie Walters) are on the lookout for an advantageous match for their youngest daughter. But twenty-year-old Jane (Anne Hathaway - The Devil Wears Prada), blessed with a feisty independent spirit, sees a world beyond that of class and commerce, beyond pride and prejudice. She wants to marry for love, and that rules out her suitor Mr Wisley, nephew to the formidable and very rich Lady Gresham (Maggie Smith). Then Jane meets the young Irishman Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy - Starter for Ten, The Last King of Scotland). He is a trainee lawyer, visiting Hampshire from London, accompanied by Jane's brother Henry. He is handsome, intelligent and poor, and scornful of the country's lack of sophistication. But despite an initial hostility, increasingly their paths intersect. They cross verbal swords in the local wood, they dance at the assembly rooms ball, she outplays him at cricket and he gives her Tom Jones to read. They fall in love. Both families are appalled. Tom suggests that they elope, but to do so would mean losing friends, family and fortune. Are they ready to take that final step and offend the sense and sensibility of the age?
"Austenophiles may turn their noses up at some of the liberties taken, but thanks to the combined charm of the leads, this remains a most agreeable cinematic portrait." BBC-movies
