Babies (Bébé(s)) (PG) 79 mins"Everybody loves..." Director: Thomas Balmes Cinematography: Jérôme Alméras, Frazer Bradshaw, Steeven Petitteville Original music: Bruno Coulais French director Thomas Balmes focuses on four babies: Bayar from Mongolia, Ponijao from Namibia, Mari from Tokyo and Hattie from San Francisco, and follows them over the course of two years. Mari and Hattie are subjected to an awesome array of baby training strategies so they can begin climbing the success ladder as early as possible. Ponijao lives in a forest hut with an earth floor and plays with sticks. Bayar shares his bath water with a thirsty goat. Despite the differences in culture and material wealth, all the babies seem equally happy and healthy. Alternating between warm close-ups of babies’ faces and long, static shots of the babies occupying themselves alone, Balmes’s cameras, shooting for 400 days, capture plenty of memorable moments, and let the pictures speak for themselves: there is no voice-over, and no subtitles. "This appealing documentary presents the precious moments in the lives of four babies during their first year. There is no narrator, commentary, or words to get in the way of our direct encounter with these infants as they begin their exploration of the world around them. There are some occasional musical interludes by Bruno Coulais. Watching these babies, we are awed at the mystery of life, the wonders of physical development, and the distinctiveness of human personality. This documentary celebrates the babies' playfulness as they move along the path of discovery." Spirituality and Practice "The procession of youthful behavior is almost hypnotic, but Babies is delivered with refreshing immediacy and joyful humor." USA Today
