Joe Wright's adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel stars Keira Knightley (Pride and Prejudice), James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland, Becoming Jane) and Romola Garai (Amazing Grace, As You Like It). Knightley plays Cecilia, a reluctant heroine forced to suffer the consequences of a child's lie. Her fate is sealed one lazy day on the family estate in 1935 when her 13-year-old sister Briony (Saoirse Ronan), an aspiring writer, sees her near-naked by a fountain with Robbie (McAvoy), the son of the family's cleaning woman. Briony, who harbours her own crush on Robbie, misconstrues what she sees and later accuses him of molesting her cousin. Robbie is hauled away to jail. When war breaks out he joins the army and the two sisters become nurses, Cecilia still hoping to be reunited with Robbie, and Briony looking to atone for what she has done.
