Tom (Jim Broadbent), a geologist, and Gerri (Ruth Sheen), a counsellor, have been happily married for years. They have a big house in London, an affectionate grown-up son, and an allotment where they spend as much time as possible. Their friends don't seem to be so lucky. Mary (a stunning performance from Lesley Manville) has made the wrong choices all her life and is much too fond of the bottle. Ken (Peter Wight) can't face the prospect of retirement because he will have no way of filling his time. Tom's brother Ronnie (David Bradley) is almost catatonic after the death of his wife. Over the course of a year, Tom and Gerri provide them all with company, food and drink, a patient ear and endless tolerance. "Another Year gave me characters I could love, feel uneasy about, identify with or be appalled by. I see a lot of movies where the characters have no personalities, only attributes. I like James Bond, but I ask you: In what way is he human? Every single character in Another Year is human, and some of them all too human. I saw it and was enriched." Roger Ebert "Leigh is a supreme actors' director with an uncanny ability to wring drama out of domestic details that other film-makers would treat in the most throwaway fashion. A cup of tea in a kitchen, a late arrival at a barbecue, a fraught drive to a railway station – these are the pivotal incidents that Another Year turns around."
