It has long been whispered in the halls and shadows of academe that William Shakespeare was nothing but a jobbing actor and that the plays, poems and sonnets attributed to him were in fact written by Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, one time favourite of Queen Elizabeth I. It is alleged that when Oxford fell from favour (as favourites often did), it was decreed by Elizabeth that he should lose the right to claim ownership of any of his works. Roland Emmerich’s film compellingly explores this theory, backed up by Vanessa Redgrave as Elizabeth, Rhys Ifans as Oxford and Timothy Spall as William Shakespeare, against a brilliantly crafted backdrop of 16th Century London. Derek Jacobi guides us through as Prologue.
