A Good Woman (PG) 93 mins"Seduction. Sex. Scandal. She's the talk of the town."
Set in the 1930s
on the Italian Riviera, A Good Woman is an elegant, witty romantic comedy
based on Oscar Wilde's play Lady Windermere's Fan. A young couple's
marriage is put in jeopardy by high-society gossip. Robert Windermere (Mark
Umbers) is accused of providing a secret allowance to Mrs Erlynne (Helen Hunt) a
vampish older woman of ill repute, whilst his wife, Meg Windermere (Scarlett
Johansson), courts the attention of Lord Darlington (Stephen Campbell Moore), a
notorious playboy. In the meantime Tuppy (Tom Wilkinson) is haplessly
pursuing Mrs Erlynne. Against the backdrop of the build-up to a birthday
party for Meg, a series of misunderstandings and incorrect assumptions plays
havoc with the emotional ties that bind the characters together. Illicit
affairs seem justified and relationships seem threatened – but as secrets are
revealed, it becomes clear that nothing is quite what it seems.
"The performances,
particularly those of Hunt, Wilkinson and Moore, are splendid, and John
Bloomfield's costumes are as good as the Thirties numbers he ran up last year
for Being Julia." Philip French
